Homeschool Hop #7

This week's Home School Blog Hop Topic is about State Requirements.

We are very lucky here in Texas. It is certainly one of the most homeschool-friendly states. Since anyone who wants the legalese version of what is allowed and what isn't could easily Google it or visit The Texas Homeschool Coalition website, I'll just be sharing an overview of the rules as I understand them. I consider it to be part of the job description as a homeschooling parent, to be up to date on current laws & requirements as they relate to homeschooling. That being said, I'm constantly learning new information.

STATE REQUIREMENTS:

Homeschools in Texas are able to operate as private schools.

There are no education requirements in place for parents to be able to homeschool.

There are no forms or paperwork that are required to be submitted or filed with any organization or department.

And the biggie - for our decision to homeschool at least -

Texas law does not require a home school to participate in any form of standardized testing or assessment!!

I am thankful every day that we found ourselves in Texas 10 years ago and decided to make it our home.

  1. That is awesome! Here I thought I was lucky to live in a pretty liberal State as far as homeschooling goes. Texas Here We Come! No not really, but it sounds great as far as homeschooling goes:)

  4. I know if it is that ol' Texan independence streak showing or what but we are definitely blessed when it comes to being homeschoolers in Texas!

We aren't required to register or get permission to homeschool but if the child is already enrolled in public school (as ours was) you do need to submit a letter withdrawing them from school. It is very simple and direct.

Ours simply stated that we were withdrawing our son from school and that we would be educating him at home.

    No muss, no fuss.
