Veggie Garden - Week 2

The past week has been spent working on getting our raised beds ready for planting.  Weeding and turning the soil have been high on the to-do list.  This coming week we'll be mixing in a good bit of mushroom compost that is on sale at the local nursery. There is something simply mind-numbing (in a good way!) about prepping the beds for the the work of feeding our family through the summer months.  I plug my earphones in, turn on my audio book, and just zone out, enjoying the sunshine and relaxing.

We still have a few more things to get finished, beginning with adding grids to the fence for our melons, cucumbers and squash. We have to work on it while we can because soon it will be too hot to spend much time out there in the middle of the day. Once the heat hits I tend to put all outdoor chores first on the to-do list while the sun is low.

Here are two of our four raised beds. One has my rosemary plant & the other holds an extremely stubborn brussels sprout plant that is STILL giving us veggies for dinner.  I'm not complaining though - fresh brussels sprouts are one of my favorites!
Who can resist playing in the dirt? I know I can't!

Moving the started seeds in and out of the sunshine/wind we've had in this area of Texas the past few days has kept us busy as well.  It is so much fun to see every day just how much they've already grown!

Nothing feels like spring to me more than fresh plants grown from seeds.

  1. Funny, you're waiting for it to warm up to plant.. I'm waiting for it to cool down so I can! lol Sometime in the next couple of days I must get out & pull sad, dead veggie plants from pots & dispose of them, refresh the soil and pop some seeds in it! I'm lucky that here most things can be direct sown.. because people would keel over if we got a frost lol.

    Happy gardening!

  2. Nice little plants! I think that is one of my favorite sights. I just got some planted here so I have to wait for them to sprout yet. Oh, and my mom suggested I planted my cucumber too early so I have to hunt down some plastic to cover my garden so they don't die a horrible death! I live in Wyoming and it could still frost/snow/hail/tornado/etc. lol
Thanks for stopping by my blog, too! :)

  3. We have to be careful starting our seeds here in north Texas - we've had snow on Easter or triple digit temps. If you don't like the weather just wait a few minutes and it'll change!
