Veggie Garden - Week 2

The past week has been spent working on getting our raised beds ready for planting.  Weeding and turning the soil have been high on the to-do list.  This coming week we'll be mixing in a good bit of mushroom compost that is on sale at the local nursery. There is something simply mind-numbing (in a good way!) about prepping the beds for the the work of feeding our family through the summer months.  I plug my earphones in, turn on my audio book, and just zone out, enjoying the sunshine and relaxing.

We still have a few more things to get finished, beginning with adding grids to the fence for our melons, cucumbers and squash. We have to work on it while we can because soon it will be too hot to spend much time out there in the middle of the day. Once the heat hits I tend to put all outdoor chores first on the to-do list while the sun is low.

Here are two of our four raised beds. One has my rosemary plant & the other holds an extremely stubborn brussels sprout plant that is STILL giving us veggies for dinner.  I'm not complaining though - fresh brussels sprouts are one of my favorites!
Who can resist playing in the dirt? I know I can't!

Moving the started seeds in and out of the sunshine/wind we've had in this area of Texas the past few days has kept us busy as well.  It is so much fun to see every day just how much they've already grown!

Nothing feels like spring to me more than fresh plants grown from seeds.

Veggie Garden - Week 1

Last year my awesome hubby built us four raised beds for our vegetable gardens. They make weeding and harvesting our "bounty" so much easier! It is nice to be able to really get in and see what is happening - especially for M.

This week M., Gma., and I spent the afternoon planting all of our seeds. This way they will be ready to rock and roll when we transplant them in a few weeks. In this area of Texas there is no way to know when our last frost will be so we are starting them indoors - just to be safe.

This year M. will be in charge of more of the upkeep and I think he is really excited about it. He made me promise to post weekly updates to show off his handywork.
